If you were awakened by the thud of your garage door at two o’clock in the morning, you might be wondering how to reduce the noise it makes. However, it's important to know that the noise doesn't only come from the garage door opener, but from the whole garage door system. Here are some steps you can take to make your garage door as quiet as possible, although it's impossible to have a completely silent garage door.

What you can do on your own to make a garage door quieter

  1. Lubricate the metal components: rollers, hinges, tracks, and springs with lubricant intended for use on metal, such as 10W-30 motor oil. Do not use grease as it can be a source of noise.

  2. Tighten all nuts and bolts: make sure that there are no loose screws.

  3. Check the condition of the rollers and tracks: are they damaged or worn? Keep in mind that rollers should roll inside the track, not slide. Are the tracks properly aligned?

  4. Lubricate the garage door opener chain: apply oil sparingly to the chain and the pinions at each end. However, if your opener is belt-driven, do not apply anything to the rubber belt. Also, make sure that the chain or belt is taut.

  5. Add noise insulation: You can purchase noise insulators from your local garage door specialist. These cylindrical pieces of rubber fitted with two independent screws buffer vibration between adjoining parts. You can install them between the motor block and the slotted metal brace used to attach the motor to the ceiling.

If you want a garage door professional to make your garage door quieter, here are some additional steps they can take:

      1. Replace your chain-driven garage door opener with a belt-driven one.

      2. Replace your steel rollers with quieter nylon ones.

      3. Replace your extension spring system with torsion springs, space permitting. Torsion springs are installed above the top of the door and make a lot less noise.

      4. Perform a full inspection to verify that your garage door is working properly.

      5. Replace the weather seal and Inspect the garage door insulation strip present at the base of the garage door. Is it worn-out or missing? This strip is the best to prevent hot or cold air from entering your garage. Moreover, do you know that without them, your garage door will make loud banging noises every time it closes?
    1. So, bring a new strip at least 16 ft long to replace your old, broken, and worn-out strip. Also, install it first on the bottom of your door before cutting it. Make sure to keep it a few inches longer than the door, as it will shrink over time.
